I. Introduction/General Information about the Book
- Title: To Kill Mockingbird
II. Characters
Main Character: Jean Louise “Scout” Finch
Jean Louise Finch, or Scout for short, was the intelligent and loving daughter of Mr. Atticus Finch. She was an obedient child. She listens to what her father told her to do. Scout encountered a conflict when his cousin Francis told her that her father was defending a negro and was a Nigger-lover.
I can identify with the main character when:
she defended her father against those people who mocked them. I can also identify with the main character with her curiosity of such things. An example of these was when she’s curious; she would really find a way to find it out.
Supporting Characters:
Jeremy was the brother of Scout. He was also the best buddy and a playmate of Scout. He served as a protector of scout throughout the story.
Atticus was the father of both Jem and Scout. He was good father to his children although he was the only one left to guide his children because he was a widow. Atticus was a lawyer in Maycomb. He was the assigned lawyer to defend Tom Robinson.
Arthur was the next door neighbor of the Finch’s. All the residents were afraid of him for they thought that Arthur was a monster. Boo was an intelligent child but was physically disabled because of his father. He was also a good neighbor to Scout and Jem for he had helped them in the time they needed help.
III. Setting
- Describe the time and place of the story:
The setting took place in Maycomb at year 1930’s. Maycomb was a place wherein there was a racial inequality. Maycomb was also a town which was hit by a depression.
- Comments about the setting:
The setting had an effect on the main character because of the depression they had in their place. Scout realized that because of the racial inequality in their place, justice would neither be achieved. The people in their place had been affected of the depression that brought them the widened gaps between the rich and poor, awareness of class had also raised.
IV. Plot: The Action/Summary of What Happened in the Story
- One Summer, Jem and Scout met a boy named Dill. Dill was on a vacation on their place and he was currently living with her Aunt Stephanie. He became good friend to Scout and Jem that summer started their great adventure. Dill asked Jem what’s with their neighbor and that he want them to investigate about the mystery of their neighbor. They want to know what Mr. Boo Radley looked alike.
- Summer’s over, and dill needs to go home back to where his father is. Scout is ready for school.
- They were amazed of the some things they didn’t know about there father. They didn’t know that their father was a good shooter. They had just known when there was mad dog near their place. Their dad shoots that dog from afar.
- Another summer again, Scout, Jem and Dill was gone looking for Boo, and soon face the pressures of school as Atticus prepares for trial.
- Tom Robinson faces the court, and was declared to be guilty of raping Mayella. Tom was shot because of him trying to escape.
- Bob Ewell was trying to kill Jem and Scout when Boo suddenly came and fought against him. Bob was found dead and Jem was injured. Scout met for the first time Mr. Boo Radley
.
V. Theme
- What is the author trying to say in this story? Is there a moral to this story?
The author was trying to tell us that we should not mock or criticize people just because of their figure or of their race. Instead, we should know them and befriend with them. It’s not their race who dictates of who they will be, instead, their actions would. The moral in the story is that we should not make an impression against a person whom we do not know.
- This book showed me/I learned from this story:
This book showed me about killing the innocence just because of the society’s injustice and intolerance. For instance, in the story Tom Robinson was declared guilty because of what the white women accused him.
- State a problem in the story and how it was solved
When Bob Ewell attacked Jem and Scout. He was holding a knife and was trying to kill them, when suddenly Boo Radley came and save Jem. Scout had known Mr. Boo because of what had happened to them. She then knew the true nature of Boo that he is kind and not like that of a monster.
VI. Evaluation of the Book
- What are your thoughts about the book?
The book was throughout excellent. It has a moral in it wherein a big problem to our society right now because there were still lots of people who keep on criticizing those who had a little. This book was one of the author’s ways of expressing that we should not criticized people, like a mockingbird who did nothing but to make music for us to enjoy. The novel “to kill a mockingbird” is not literally about the killings of the mockingbirds; rather it is about the killing of the innocence an hat was I learned from the book of Harper Lee.
